Well, now help is at hand! I have written WordFind, a utility that allows you to solve many such puzzles, including:

Word lists (including missing letters and spell-check)
Anagrams
Palindromes

It has 14 wildcard characters available; a wildcard character represents one or more unknown or missing letters. They are as follows:

- or ? exactly one missing letter

* ..... zero or more missing letters
$ ..... exactly one missing consonant
@ ..... exactly one missing vowel
# ..... exactly one letter from an inclusion list
! ..... exactly one letter not in an exclusion list
= ..... exactly one letter in a Scrabble® list
1 ..... exactly one letter that is repeated in a word (each '1' represents the same letter). Also '2' and '3' for other repeated letters.
' ..... exactly one letter with an ascender
, ..... exactly one letter with a descender
: ..... exactly one letter with no ascender/descender
~ ..... one (or more, if number specified) random words from the list
% ..... occurrences of letter sequences
; ..... find selected letters in a word
3 lists of letters can be set:
Inclusion (#) ... letter must be one of those specified; each letter can be used more than once
Exclusion (!) ... letter must NOT be one of those specified; each can be used more than once
Scrabble (=) ... the list is analagous to a Scrabble tile rack (including blank tiles) - each letter can be used once only
... and so much more!
